New House Saga--Chapter 2
Share
Okay so…we’ve moved into the new house. Only 5 months behind schedule. And if I wanted to get technical about it we weren’t really even supposed to move in when we did. But apparently Mother Nature could tell how frustrated we were getting, living in that single-wide, sharing a bathroom…and a sink… waiting for the contractors to finish…or at least get to the close enough point. And so she sent us a lovely little hail storm that threw baseball-size missiles at us that not only broke out a bunch of windows and completely trashed the brand new metal roof on the new house, but also completely destroyed the single wide. Not exaggerating, holes punched all the way through the siding AND the insulation. Which made it pretty much impossible to live there anymore, so we figured, now is as good a time as any and started the moving process.
And it’s a slow process for sure. I decided to move a load at a time and put things away as I moved them, as opposed to moving it all and piling it up, and then getting completely overwhelmed trying to figure out where it all goes. I suppose it’s going fairly well—we’re definitely enjoying having more room. And I know I don’t even have to tell you how much I’m loving no longer having to share a sink with my husband! Or for that matter, a bathroom! Now let me tell you, no matter what you may have heard before, the secret to a long, happy marriage—SEPARATE BATHROOMS! If you have the opportunity, I highly recommend it. I will also say that I’m pretty sure my husband is every bit as excited about it as I am, although I can’t imagine why…just saying.
So, we find ourselves currently in this odd situation of half moved in, half squatting, running back and forth across the road when we need something we haven’t moved yet…which as you can imagine is oh so convenient. Like when you’ve almost got dinner fixed and you realize you need a can opener and…nope! Haven’t managed to get that moved yet. So one of you has to go flying over to the other house before the other dishes get cold…somebody should really have a video camera on us at all times. We could make some serious money on America’s Funniest Home Videos.
Furniture-wise we’re a little in the weeds. When we realized we couldn’t stay in the single-wide anymore, we rushed out and purchased a bed and a couple other things so we’d have someplace to sleep. Since then, we’ve added a few more things every week, but still have a long way to go. Mostly because getting my husband to go furniture shopping is like pushing a cream puff through a key hole. I realize now that I made a rookie mistake of getting the bedroom furniture first. Now that he can plop down on a comfortable bed when he comes home he has zero interest in going out to shop for anything else. What I should’ve done is make him sleep on an air mattress on the floor until all the shopping was done…just to keep him properly motivated. Although I suppose that’s kind of a double-edged sword of sorts…having slept on an air mattress with him before during the now infamous camping trip. But that’s a whole other story I’ll have to get into another time.
Right now our favorite thing about the new house hands down is the pool. The pool was one of those things that I really wanted and he really didn’t. You know all the excuses…”We’ll never use that enough to make it worth the cost”, “Pools are so much work and I’ll be the one that ends up having to do it”, “the new will wear off after a week and you won’t even use it”, blah blah blah. But I stood strong. I insisted it was a good investment. And of course I was right—he loves it. Don’t think for a second I won’t be trotting that one out every time we have an argument about who’s right more often.
And even if it kind of IS a lot of work, which I’m doing myself…mostly…if it ever gets to point where I’m not using it as much, I feel confident I can always count on the kids. And their friends. They’ve indicated they’re more than willing to take up the slack.
Overall, the new house is a big hit so far. I still have to get upstairs furniture and then begin the daunting task of hanging art and décor on the massive amount of blank walls around us…but it’s coming along.
Oh and my super-sized closet…that everyone said I’d NEVER fill up…is full. 94% full anyway. But I’ve already started weeding items out into a “get rid of” rack so never fear, there’ll be space for more stuff soon! I can hear the hubs growling from the other room but honestly, if they didn’t want me to buy clothes they shouldn’t have let me have a Tax ID number.
I’ve had lots of requests for pictures—those are coming too. Hopefully soon. For sure when I get it furnished and decorated. Should be around 2020. Maybe.
In the meantime, if you’re driving out our county road and see a crazy person go whizzing across the road on a 4 wheeler Mach II with our hair on fire—it’s most likely just one of us fetching the big spatula, or cookie sheet, or whatever…
More news later…the adventure continues!
